I am an award-winning researcher, human rights defender, author, and communications expert with a focus on policy, democracy, and public engagement. An Australian of Bangladeshi origin, I am an Adjunct Researcher at the Humanitarian and Development Research Initiative (HADRI) at Western Sydney University.
Previously, I worked as a full time Post-Doctoral Researcher at the University of Oslo, Norway, where my research examined authoritarian governance, transnational repression, and democratic resilience. In Australia, I collaborate with two human rights–focused organizations — the NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS) and the Diplomacy Training Program (DTP) at the University of New South Wales.
As a survivor of torture and enforced disappearance in Bangladesh in 2017, I have come to deeply appreciate the strength of resilience, human rights, and the rule of law. These experiences continue to shape my work and advocacy for justice and freedom.
My quotes, interviews, and analyses have been featured in leading international media outlets including BBC, The Economist, The New York Times, and TIME Magazine. My television interviews have been broadcast by ABC TV Australia, BBC News, Channel 9, and Sky News Australia, among others.
Over the years, I have also worked as a consultant and expert advisor for a range of international institutions such as the United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention, UNDP, The World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Sasakawa Peace Foundation, United States Institute of Peace (USIP), International Republican Institute (IRI), Agora Research, the European Union Agency for Asylum, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), and the US Department of State, among others.
Outside academia and advocacy, I am a stand-up comedian and improv actor, using laughter and storytelling as tools to heal trauma, foster connection, and celebrate the resilience of the human spirit.
